Including One Month of Kid-Friendly Meal Plans and Detailed Shopping Lists to Make Life Easier
As the rate of chronic illness skyrockets, more and more parents are faced with the sobering reality of restrictive diets. And because everyone is busy, many families come to rely on store-bought “healthy†products to make life simpler, but many of these are loaded with sugar and hidden toxins. When faced with her own family health crisis, mother and health coach Leah Webb realized that in order to consistently provide high quality food for her family, nearly 100 percent of their meals would need to be homemade. But when she looked for a resource to guide her, most cookbooks that offered recipes “free†of allergenic foods were also high in processed starches, flours, and sugar. Webb, like so many parents, was looking for a cookbook that offered deeply nutritious, kid-friendly, whole foods recipes that were also easy, but there wasn’t one―so she wrote it herself.
The Grain-Free, Sugar-Free, Dairy-Free Family Cookbook offers a new system to preparing food and approaching the kitchen that gets kids involved in cooking, which encourages excitement around food (a major challenge with restrictive diets). The recipes are rich in healthy fats, nutrient-dense vegetables, ferments, and grass-fed meats, and include snacks, school lunches, and delicious sweet treats that rival the flavors of sugar-dense desserts. By following Leah’s meal plans, parents will be sure to please everyone in the family and make cooking on a restrictive diet enjoyable and doable over a long period of time. Families that know they would like to rid themselves of grain, sugar, and dairy, but are intimidated by starting, will find Webb’s advice and troubleshooting invaluable.
The cookbook outlines family-tested methods that make for effective and efficient preparation, including everyday basic recipes that will become part of a cook’s intuitive process over time. The best part is that although Leah prepares nearly every single one of her family’s breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks using whole food ingredients, she only spends four to six hours on food preparation per week! Through stocking her freezer, prepping the kitchen, shopping and cooking in bulk, and consistently planning meals, this diet plan is not only possible; it is manageable and fulfilling. Prepare for this cookbook to radically change your life.

The book is interesting, full of ideas and easy and tasty recipes.

- What a wonderful and inspirational cookbook for parents who are struggling to come up with fresh ideas to feed their families who suffer from food allergies. Or anyone who just wants a healthier approach to cooking for their family. We have a few children with food allergies and I tend to get stuck in a rut feeding them the same ol' boring things week after week. I am so excited to have my hands on this book to give myself some fresh inspiration in the kitchen. Thank you Leah Webb for taking the time to write and share these wonderful recipes.
- Vegetables and fruits are the stars of this cookbook, and Leah Webb inspires me to prepare them in creative ways. She is wise yet humble. Her willingness to share the health struggles in her own family is a gift to all readers.
The recipes are easy to follow and produce tasty surprises. I don’t have kids, but the explanations and advice for families seem useful and applicable to me. I also like the suggestions about cooking in bulk and streamlining the process in the kitchen.
Leah encourages a better quality of food and shows how to achieve that at home in a way that is affordable, efficient and satisfying.
I have used a recipe from this cookbook to prepare a healthy holiday dessert that was very well-received by friends. I have also prepared delicious entrees, salads and muffins at home that my partner and I have enjoyed.
This cookbook is a nice gift for friends. It can be used in any number of settings to bring some joy into cooking and eating simple, nutritious food. I highly recommend this cookbook. - This was not what I expected. While the book does provide recipes, a significant portion (about 40%) of the book discusses why you might want to consider this type of diet and provides suggestions for how to make this style of eating work for your family. While much of the information was interesting, I didn’t need all of the detail about cystic fibrosis, as one example. And I’m not sure how many people will seek out a grain-free, sugar-free, dairy-free cookbook if they don’t already have a compelling reason to follow such a diet, so all of the text about why to adopt the diet may be unnecessary for much of the audience who would be drawn to this title. I think the book might have been more accurately titled something like “Why and How Your Family Might Want to Implement a Grain-Free, Sugar-Free, Dairy-Free Diet.â€
Written in a practical, confident, motivational tone, I think this book will be a lot more useful for some families than it was for a single woman like me who is already used to following a restricted diet. I don’t need advice for how to introduce new foods to children or get children involved in food preparation; I was just looking for recipes I can use with my food restrictions. Sadly, I didn’t find that many recipes I can use because so many of the recipes include eggs or nightshades, but if you don’t have those restrictions, then you might find many of these recipes appealing.
The recipes are well written with lots of helpful tips. They are designed to produce large volumes of food, usually enough to feed a 4-person family with leftovers. Many recipes require use of special equipment, such as a pressure cooker, a food processor, or a high-powered blender, but the author sometimes describes alternative preparation methods. Most of the ingredients are fairly common things you may already have in your kitchen. If you’re not used to eating a restricted diet, some of the ingredients may seem exotic, but most of them shouldn’t be too hard to find. If you can’t find them locally, you can always order them online.
The back matter includes four weeks of menus, suggestions for packed lunches and holiday meals, suggested resources, lists of recipes that freeze well, notes, a bibliography, and an index.
My overall impression is that this book would be most useful for families with children, particularly those who are new to the grain-free, sugar-free, dairy-free lifestyle. It wasn’t very helpful for me, but I think it will be helpful for many others, so I am giving it 4 stars.
I was provided an ARC through NetGalley that I volunteered to review. Because I have not seen the final published version, I cannot comment on the final editing and formatting. - Being diabetic I'm always happy to read book about sugar free recipes.
The book is interesting, full of ideas and easy and tasty recipes.
Just one notes I was a bit puzzled as most of the recipes uses lard and oil to cook as lard is not really healthy.

Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC - I have already tried a number of recipes from Deep Rooted Wellness thanks to a cooking class my husband attended, and have been eagerly awaiting this cookbook! Here’s the deal we all want to do better with our meals and overall diets, relying less on processed food and consuming more “real†food. But we’re all busy in our day to day lives. This cookbook makes healthy meals accessible to everyone!
I’m in a household where we have no dietary restrictions or allergies. We consume everything... but, like most people, tend to serve food from boxes a little too frequently. This cookbook guides you step by step away from all the processed crap and towards incorporating actual farm-to-table foods for all meals. And she explains WHY it’s important for us to do so.
Let me tell you... these recipes are DELICIOUS. Don’t let the title fool you - by reducing grain, sugar, and dairy you are not losing out on flavor or enjoyment. I am someone who _loves_ to eat and so I was delighted to discover how much better the food from these recipes taste. Get this cookbook today; you won’t be disappointed! - I received a copy of this book via NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review.
This book is half cookbook half guide for people who have family members or they themselves have diet restrictions they need to cater for. Failed to the brim with very Important information that I was grateful to read and recipes that I found wonderful to taste. I would recommend this colourful recipe book to readers who love to cook and know that their diet restrictions will be considered.and recipes that are easy to make. - The recipes are fantastic, but what's even better is how the author scaffolds those of us new to prepping food for the week to stock our freezers. As a mom to a sometimes finicky eater, I also really appreciated her encouragement to get kids to eat what the rest of the family is eating. The book is a cookbook and so much more. I find so much inspiration in the family's personal story and their journey with food.
