This is an essential guide for counsellors, doctors, other healthcare professionals, family members and anyone affected by dependency and withdrawal from sleeping pills, other benzodiazepines and antidepressants. Drawn from the author's personal experience with discontinuing a benzodiazepine prescribed for her dystonia (a neurological condition causing involuntary movements), her many years of supporting others in withdrawal, and her counselling training and expertise, it focuses on healing and empowerment and includes coping tips, success stories, description of symptoms and everything else one needs to know in order to self-care and succesfully overcome this experience.

"Withdrawal syndrome from a prescribed antidepressant, Lexapro, has been the most difficult and traumatic ordeal I have ever faced in my life. The antidepressant I was put on, for what I now view as transitory postpartum issues, was the only drug I've ever taken in my life and I was not expecting to be 9 months out from my last dose still experiencing bizarre and sometimes debilitating symptoms. Recovery and Renewal has been a soothing balm for the shocked, terrifying and stunned emotions one faces when plunged into withdrawal. I only wish that I had found this book earlier! In comforting and reassuring language, Baylissa Frederick conveys her experience of tapering and protracted withdrawal from a prescribed Benzo. She thoroughly covers how to navigate the medical and psychiatric community, family and friends and the hellish symptoms that Benzo and antidepressant withdrawal can wreak. (And, take consolation, there are also plenty of successful recovery stories included as well. I read them often.) The book is especially helpful because withdrawal is not recognized by the medical community as lasting more than a few weeks so a person can feel incredibly alone and doubt that their experience is not caused by something else. I am not out of the woods yet, so I literally use her coping techniques, and refer to this book EVERYDAY for hope, reassurance and the steely determination needed to face and accept these symptoms as necessary to my healing. Thank you, thank you, thank you Baylissa for shining light on this widespread, but under-reported issue and continuing to support people in withdrawal as well as their families. It is criminal that so many of us have had to endure protracted, horrific withdrawals, but inspiring that there are people like Baylissa out there telling the story and raising attention to this silent epidemic causing people to lose families, homes and years of their lives."

  • This is a wonderful book that is written so well and with such thought. Baylissa wrote this to help others and she is certainly helping me as I taper from a horrible drug called clonazapam. Baylissa's journey was horrific and the only people that can understand it are those whom are experiencing it but, she got through it, fully recovered and it has given me so much hope. She touches on every detail that was involved in her taper and recovery and has made me excited about my recovery that WILL COME IN THE FUTURE. Those of us that are going through this need support and love during this time and we may not always get it from our family, friends or even our doctors. Baylissa gives us the support, the tools, the knowledge and most important, the compassion and encouragement to keep going through this time of healing. I am healing every day in every way because of Baylissa and this beautiful book that she has written. Thank you Baylissa. I think of you often.
  • This book was essential to helping me understand the withdrawal predicament I found myself in and am still struggling with. Also, it has been very important for my husband who has supported me throughout this process. There are very few resources in general on this topic and none that I know of that speak directly about this topic with the knowledge, clarity, wisdom, compassion and most importantly experience that Baylissa offers. She has been down this road herself and she offers compassionate information to help people who find themselves in the midst of this challenging experience to navigate the struggles that withdrawal symptoms present. Understanding this issue and how to navigate it has been very important to my recovery process. I literally don't know what I would have done without it!
  • This wonderful book saved my life in one of the darkest times I have ever gone through. There is very little information (even from doctors or medical professionals) on the subject of benzodiazepine withdrawl and how it can turn your life upside down and take a very long time to recover from. As this process can be very overwhelming and involve dozens of frightening symptoms, Baylissa by sharing her own experience and research gives hope to anyone who is unlucky enough to find themselves on this challenging journey of recovery. As soon as I got my hands on Recovery and Renewal and began to read and understand what was happening to me, for the first time in all of this I knew I was going to make it through. I kept it on my nightstand and read it over and over when I needed reassurance. The book also discusses antidepressants and sleeping pills. I highly recommend this book for anyone going through this or friends and family members to gain a better understanding of this difficult process.
  • This book is an ABSOLUTE MUST READ for anyone that is either trying to or already has come off of sleeping pills, benzodiazepines, or antidepressant medications. Withdrawal from these types of drugs is poorly understood (and often outright denied) by the medical community and Baylissa is a beacon of knowledge, expertise, personally-lived experience, and hope those in the throes of withdrawal. Baylissa is both a pioneer and leader in this movement as she assists more people suffering through this painful state than anyone else in the world. Recovery and Renewal provides strategies for those suffering through withdrawal from a realistic, incredibly compassionate, and no-nonsense perspective. Discovering this book and the work of Baylissa Frederick has absolutely saved my life.
  • Benzo withdrawal is serious and very real. I took this drug short term, for a sleep disturbance. I was very sick on it and had to come off after a few months. I had a terrible, long withdrawal. Things happened to me that I had never experienced, both mentally and physically. This book was a lifeline in helping me, and my family, to understand what is happening and to normalize the scary symptoms. Baylissa has devoted her life to helping people come off this drug. So many of us, like her, put on it irresponsibly and suffering terribly coming off. She is truly a light in the darkness.

This is a very serious drug and my perscribing doctor told me it was "benign". My life has been severely impacted by only five months of use.
